Community - Based Instruction District Learning Day Wooddale High School August 4, 2016

DO NOW Think about an age-appropriate daily living activity that can be incorporated into your lesson plan. With partners, identify at least one ideal community location where the learning experience can be acquired and/or practiced. Be ready to share out.

Reflection Reflecting on the daily living activity … What community resources/materials might you include in the lesson plan? Which community personnel might you contact/invite to your class?

Norms Be present and engaged. Be respectful of differences in perspective while challenging each other productively and respectively. Monitor “air time.” Make the most of the time we have. Stay focused on students.

Objectives Participants will: Know the purpose of Community-Based Instruction (CBI) and how CBI skills are incorporated in lesson plans to be taught in school prior to the community experience. Understand Community-Based Instruction program procedures and required documents. Design meaningful lessons with age-appropriate instructional materials, activities and community involvement to enhance CBI experiences.

Why Community Based-Instruction? TN Deinstitutionalization lawsuit: People First v. Arlington Developmental Center (1997) and U. S. v. Tennessee (2005)

What is Community-Based Instruction? It is a practical, "hands-on" instructional method It prepares students to function as productive adults by giving them the opportunity to apply basic skills in real-life community settings

What does Community-Based Instruction Deliver? It provides a continuum of instruction in basic life skills through five domains: o Academics o Daily Living o Employment o Community o Recreation and Leisure
