Day Three Activities Review Day One Lesson Review Day Two Lesson Day Three Lesson- Continue with Math Stations with Emphasis on Station 3 – At each station do not forget to write in your math journals  First Station – Small Objects Station  Second Station- IPad Station  IPad Station playing Quick Flash II  Third Station-  Computer Station- explore Multiplication.com and introduce math games such as Cave Run Multiplication

Basics of Multiplication Two Ways to Solve Problems 1) Repeated Addition- 3 X 4= = 12 2) Counting Groups – 3 X 2= 6  Zero Rule-  Any Number Multiplied by 0 is 0  5 X 0 = 0 10 X 0 = 0  One Rule-  Any Number Multiplied by 1 is the Number  5 X 1 = 5 10 X 1 = 10

Math Station One  First Station – Small Objects Station  Small objects station- use the beans, macaroni, paper clips, skittles, etc. to work example problems using the counting in groups method and repeated addition method  Solve the Problems on the Worksheet-on your own and with your group  Make up your own FUN problems to solve!  Copy problems to your math journals- draw pictures and write the number problem

Math Station Two  Second Station- IPad Station  IPad Station playing Quick Flash II

Math Station Three  The game Cave Run Multiplication - available for free on multiplication.com. (“Multiplication.com”, 2014)  “This game truly make practicing the times tables exciting. This is one of those math learning games that kids want to go home and PLAY. Games like this make learning FUN.” (“Multiplication.com”, 2014)  Will walk the class through an actual game step by step with computer connected through projector.

Needs Assessment This connect-type activity was preceded by the absorb activity, and the do-type activity which introduced math stations. The connect-type activity lesson plan is for a classroom of 3 rd graders with 24 students total. This class has both male and female students and will incorporate teaming students together into four classroom layout design. The classroom includes regular as well as gifted and special needs children. To be specific this class has three gifted children and an autistic male student. The students are from middle and lower income families. The students come from a variety of cultures including Indian, American, and Mexican decent. No students are known to have any recurring behavioral issues. The content area will be based upon Common Core State Standard Grade 3 Operations & Algebraic Thinking. (Foster, 2014) The planning, conducting, implementing and performing of the unit plan include administration, teacher (s), students, parents, and technologies. The previous lesson included an absorb activity introducing multiplication and the two ways of solving multiplication problems. The previous do-type activity introduced the students to several different math station, math problems, and how multiplication problems can be presented in the world.

Needs Assessment It is essential that each student understands what to do at each station. The teacher will give very specific instruction for each work station so students are clear on what is expected of them. The work stations with different activities at each one will keep the attention of the students from becoming bored or distracted. The work station will require students to finish problems given by the teacher but also require students to come up with their own problems. Also the addition of the computer station will require each student to solve problems on their own, not just in a group. Teacher observation will be performed through the entire lesson and feedback will be given to students throughout the lesson. The quiz at the beginning compared to the test at the end will show student’s improvement on understanding multiplication and ability to solve multiplication problems. The teacher notes throughout the lesson will help evaluate the lesson as a whole. (Foster, 2014) The results that are given on the computer multiplication games will also give much feedback to students, teacher, and parents. Incorporating a free multiplication game website enables students to practice at home and get their families involved.

Needs Assessment “Connect activities bridge gaps. They do not so much add new knowledge and skills as tie together previously learned skills and knowledge. In doing so, they add higher-level knowledge and skills. ” (Horton, 2012, p. 163). The game Cave Run and test at the end will show students what they have learned and how multiplication can be fun. Students will have their math journals to write in, draw in, and review to help learn the lesson. Students will be able to play the games at home and feel a sense of value and accomplishment when they are able to show parents and family members how well they do. “Increasingly, educators are recognizing that linking content area teaching to youth culture, including television, music, the Internet, and video gaming, is a compelling way to capture and hold students’ attention, make learning relevant, and help students develop a sense of ownership of their learning”( Kingsley, 2007, p. 55).

Needs Assessment The Common Core State Standards cover in this lesson include:  CCSS Math Content 3.OA.A.1: Being able to interpret products of whole numbers. (“Grade 3- Operations & Algebraic Thinking”, 2014)  CCSS Math Content 3.OA.A. 3: Use of multiplication within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities. (“Grade 3- Operations & Algebraic Thinking”, 2014)  CCSS Math Content 3.OA. A. 4: Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication equation. (“Grade 3- Operations & Algebraic Thinking”, 2014)

Needs Assessment The NESTS-T Standards cover in this lesson include:  Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity  Design and develop digital age learning and assessments  Model digital age work and learning  Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

Needs Assessment Overall, the lessons objective is for students to want to learn multiplication by showing enthusiasm to play the multiplication games and all become advanced learners. They will learn and experience multiplication in several different manners and learn how to solve problems using different methods and techniques including technology that are available. Participation, student attitude, and continuation of game playing will reflect the lesson objectives. The goal is that the students will want to learn and play on the multiplication games away from school and continue to improve on their math skills. The different activities enable students to solve problems using more than one sense and learning method. They are able to express themselves through the activities and play at home or away from school also. The game setting also displays their knowledge of multiplication and improvement on that knowledge. It shows their technology skills and enables them to improve on these also. They have to work together and apart, think critically, and work different problems to improve game scores and rewards. (Foster, 2014)
