What is another word for RESPIRATION? Breathing

By adding a drop of food coloring to just above the abdomen of a crayfish, you can watch to see how a crayfish moves the water around itself to help it breathe.

See the food coloring where the thorax meets the abdomen? It was added below the water surface.

Can you see food coloring in front of the crayfish now? Does the water move from front-to-back or back-to-front? Answer: back-to-front

What part of the crayfish is the water moving past during respiration? Gills

Where are the gills located on the crayfish? Under the carapace, in the thorax.

What body parts are used to move the water past the gills? Maxillae Maxillae Swimmerets (sometimes) Swimmerets (sometimes)

Did you know… that a crayfish does not have to use its maxillae or swimmerets to move water past the gills if it is walking?
