1 Respiration in Living Organisms

2 All Kingdoms: Cellular Respiration
EVERY organism completes the process above Occurs in the mitochondria of cells

3 Kingdom Protista: Respiration
Simple Diffusion Draw the picture of the protist to the right Identify the protist Draw a blue arrow going into the protist and label it oxygen Draw a red arrow going out of the protist and label it carbon dioxide

4 Kingdom Plantae: Respiration
Exchange gas through tiny air pores, or openings, called stomata Guard cells control the size of the stomata

5 Kingdom Plantae: Respiration
Use this image to label the cross section of a leaf on your paper Color the guard cells green Draw a red arrow going into the leaf labeled carbon dioxide Draw a blue arrow coming out of the leaf labeled oxygen and water Top of vein: Phloem Bottom of vein: Xylem

6 Kingdom Plantae: Stomata Lab
Follow the directions for the lab given by your teacher Answer the questions once you have finished

7 Kingdom Animalia: Respiration
Label and describe each picture with the correct respiratory system using the table on the next slide Highlight the areas on each organism that represent their respiratory system Go to a dissection lab station Try to identify the respiratory system on the crayfish and the grasshopper

8 Kingdom Animalia: Respiration
Organism Respiratory System Aquatic Animals Gills- specialized slits that contain blood vessels to dissolve oxygen Earthworms and frogs Skin- must live in a moist environment to maintain a surface oxygen can naturally diffuse through Insects Spiracles- tiny openings on the abdomen that allow gases to be exchanged Humans Lungs- sponge-like organs with tiny balloon sacs called alveoli which allow gas to be exchanged into blood vessels
