Lesson 2 Notes Tracking Shadows

Vocabulary Gnomon – shadow stick used by the Ancient Greeks to help them tell time Solar noon – time of day when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky; when shadows are the shortest

Vocabulary Apparent path – The Sun and the Moon APPEAR to be moving, but this is caused by Earth’s constant rotation

Inquiry 2.2 – What did we learn? Shadows change according to the time of day and year The apparent path of the Sun is the highest during the summer and lowest during the winter The apparent path of the Sun is at its highest point at noon during all seasons

Inquiry 2.2 – What did we learn?

Inquiry 2.3 – What did we learn? Earth rotates counterclockwise (to the left) The Sun appears to move from East to West throughout the day The Sun is stationary (does not move)

What is responsible for the length of one day? Earth rotating on its axis takes 24 hours, which gives us one day. This is also the cause of day and night. What is responsible for the length of one year? Earth revolving around the Sun takes days, which gives us one year.
