WHAT TYPES OF MAPS ARE THERE? Physical Political Thematic (includes Choropleth and Cartogram)

WHAT ARE POLITICAL MAPS?  Show features on the earth’s surface that humans created Political Borders – borders decided by Governments Examples? National and State Borders, City Limits, capitals

WHAT ARE PHYSICAL MAPS?  show types of landforms and bodies of water  Physical Borders – countries separated by a physical feature  Examples:  Rio Grande River, (Texas/ Mexico)  Ural Mountains (Europe/ Asia)

WHAT ARE CHOROPLETHS? choropleth map  A choropleth map is a thematic map that uses graded differences in shading or color inside defined areas on the map in order to indicate the average values of some property or quantity in those areas  Many different kinds. Examples???  Climate  Vegetation  Natural Resources  Population  Temperatures  Rainfall

WHAT ARE CARTOGRAMS?  A cartogram is a map in which some thematic mapping variable is substituted for land area or distance.  The geometry or space of the map is distorted in order to convey the information of this alternate variable. Higher GDP indicated by enlarging the landmass Lower GDP indicated by reducing the size of the landmass

CHECK OUT THE TWO CARTOGRAMS IN THE ROOM…  What information is being displayed and how did the map maker go about conveying this information?

OTHER THEMATIC MAPS  Some thematic maps may use symbols to display information.

MAKE YOUR OWN MAPS!  Please pick up a copy of today’s activity from the gray desk at the front of the room…  You will need the “Make your own maps” sheet and the white piece of paper behind it.  Please read instructions and information about the fictional island carefully.  Some information will be used for more than one map  You should end up with 3 maps (Political, Physical, Thematic) on the one white sheet of paper.  Color all maps  Don’t forget TODALS!
