Introduction Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC)  One of the 9 colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD)  Founded in 1975 LACCD - The largest community college district in the United States & one of the largest in the world.

Student body Enrollment (Fall 2015): 11,089 Gender: Female 61.3% & Male 38.7% Ethnicity: Hispanic 78.3%, White 10.9%, Asian 4.7%, Black 2.8%, Multiethnic 1.4%, Native American 0.1%, Pacific Islander 0.1%, Unknown 1.7% Age: Over 50% of students are between years old Overwhelmingly low-income (53% per financial aid applications) First-generation (55%) Significant challenges in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) fields – not enough students pursue certificates/degrees in STEM Introduction

Strategies to increase the number of STEM students & Prepare them for successful careers in the workplace

Job Readiness Program A one-semester, three-course program designed for: Traditional credit students completing a CTE certificate and preparing to enter the workforce Noncredit students having completed three or four levels of ESL and seeking jobs Unemployed adults seeking to refresh their skill sets Courses: JR 100 – Oral and Written Business Communication (16- week course, with a total of 32 hours of instruction) JR101A and JR 101B – (8-week consecutive courses with 32 hours of instruction each)

Job Readiness Program Written & Oral Communication Basic computer literacy Job search techniques Social media utilization Resume Writing techniques Interview skills Workplace etiquette / Customer service Financial literacy

STEM Program Enhance Academic Programs by increasing the LAMC STEM curriculum, and providing University Internships Enhance Student Services: Tutoring, Mentoring, and Career Advising Engage the LAMC Community: Parent Engagement and the creation of Local Business Internships

STEM Program Current Internship Partners include: CalTech, CSUN, JPL/UC Riverside, and UCLA in various STEM disciplines Students have a faculty advisor throughout the process and conclude by publishing their work in the Mission Undergraduate Research Journal (MURJ).

STEM Program LAMC has a good internship structure in place and a highly motivated and intelligent student body. Local STEM manufacturing internships fit into the LAMC objectives of expanding internships into industry and engaging with the community. With our partnerships we may be able to keep our talent here in our community and enhance economic growth!

Support Career Technical Education (CTE) funds National Science Foundation (NSF) – Recent submission for NSF S-STEM (Research Scholarships) NSF – Science Foundation AZ, Kickstarter: Technical Support NSF – ATE (Advanced Technological Education) – Partnership between community colleges and industry (due October 2016) o Industry Advisory Board – partners to provide support letters (to submit to NSF), internship opportunities, feedback on training and skills needed in industry (workshops, certificates, on-campus and online courses)
