1. Derivative of the Word: ----LATIN WORD “CURRERE” Means, “to run” ----A way to reach the destination. 2. Meaning ----Narrower or Traditional Sense ----Wider or Modern Sense NARROWER SENSE: ----A course of the Study ----Bundle of Subjects ----To pass the Examination.

WIDER OR MODERN SENSE : ----Does not mean course of study to pass the exam only within a definite time ----It means TOTALITY of Experiences ----Inside or outside the class room for all-round development ----Any experience received directly or indirectly, formally or informally for Personality development

THUS IT MEANS Intimately connected with aims of Education -----Includes subjects like MENTAL,SOCIAL,PHYSICAL and MORAL development ----Dynamic and Changeable ----Has Practical Utility ----Integration of THEORY and PRACTICAL ----Inter related and Integrated elements like OBJECTIVES, CONTENT, METHODS, and EVALUATION

SOME DEFINITIONS OF THE CURRICULUM : 1. CUNNINGHAM, “Curriculum is a tool in the hands of the artist (the teacher) to mould his material (the pupils) according to his ideals (aims) in his studio (the school).” ----This is TRADITIONAL (follow the course of study) 2. CROW and CROW, “Curriculum includes all the learner’s experiences in or outside school that are included in a programme which has been devised to help him develop mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and morally.”

3. MUNROE, “Curriculum embodies all the experiences which are utilised by the school to attain the aims of education.” 4. BENT RUDYARD and K.HENRY, “Curriculum in its broadest sense, includes the complete school environment, involving all the courses, activities, reading and associations furnished to the pupils in the school.”

Thus from the above definitions : Curriculum means---- all the subjects, activities and experiences organised by the school for the proper education of the children.

PRINCIPLES OF CURRICULUM CONSTRUCTION ----While constructing curriculum, many factors have to be borne in mind. The curriculum must be devised according to the following broad categories: 1. Philosophical Principles: ---Naturalism ---Pragmatism ---Idealism

2. Psychological Principles : ----According to the Child’s NATURE I.E., ability, interest, aptitude, capacities etc. 3. Sociological Principles: ---Need based ( cultural devt.,economic efficiency,national integration, community devt. etc)

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF CURRICULUM CONSTRUCTION : 1. Child –Centredness 2. Community-Centredness 3.Activity –Centredness 4. Flexibility 5. Variety

6. Creativity 7. conservation (preserve) 8. Integration 9. Utility -----Various Principles should be kept in mind -----REGIONAL,NATIONAL, and INTERNATIONAL Conditions should also be considered.
