Chapter 4 Organization of Ideas The Three-Part Structure Writing an Outline An Analysis of Roosevelt’s Speech

4.1 Three-Part Structure  Introduction  Body  Conclusion

Introduction  Background info.  Purpose/main idea Body  Supporting details Conclusion  Summary of the main points

Purpose: To persuade my audience that parents’ pampering 娇惯 children would lead to many disadvantages.

Main points: Pampering will lead to children’s 1) inability to think independently; 2) difficulty to cooperate with others; 3) laziness to use brain; 4) low ability to compete

4.2 Writing an Outline Thesis:  There is no salvation for India if the following three things are not improved.

Evidence  1) The fact that English is used in India for educational purposes prevents Indian people from being creative and makes us lose our own identity;  2) The tremendous gap between the rich and poor is the main obstacles for India to save itself, unless the rich strip themselves of their jewellery and hold it in trust for their countrymen.

 3) Indian people need to get rid of sycophancy and falsity if they want to save themselves. Conclusion:  Unless we speak our mother tongue, receive education through our own language, practice social equity, relieve the burden of farmers, and shun sycophancy and falsity, there is no salvation for India.

4.3 Speech by Roosevelt Topic: Pearl harbor speech Purpose: to persuade the Congress that it is imperative for American government to stage war against Japan.

Organization of ideas: Introduction event: Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor 珍珠港

Body: cause: unprovoked results: 3,000 lives lost in the Hawaiian Islands many other places around the Pacific area attacked as well

Conclusion: due to Japanese intentional invasion dishonesty & deception I, therefore, declare war against Japan now.

Topic for Debate:  The reason that Chinese cartoons enjoy a comparative small audience is due to their lack of advanced technology.

The End!
