2. After Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, many Californians began to fear that Japanese-Americans were spying for Japan. President Roosevelt responded to pressures from West Coast politicians to do something about these fears by signing an Executive Order. This law required all Japanese-Americans living within 200 miles of the Pacific Coast to move out of their homes and into internment camps in Colorado, Utah, Arkansas and other interior states. More than 100,000 Japanese Americans, citizens and noncitizens, lost their homes and possessions in this relocation.

3. The newsreel we are going to watch was made by the government sometime in the middle of 1942 to explain the government’s reasons and strategies for interning (holding) Japanese Americans. This was before television was widespread, and long before computers and the internet! Read and complete the section under “The Munson Report” and “The Crisis Article.” Questions: 1.What do these documents say is the reason for internment? 2.Do you find these documents more or less trust worthy than the government newsreel? Why or why not? 3.Why is the date of the Munson report important?

5. Now you are going to read Documents D and E. Read and complete the section under “Korematsu v. United States” and “Personal Justice Denied”.
