The Twenties Woman

Social Life Women had many new freedoms The 19 th Amendment gave them suffrage (1920) Fashions: Brighter colors, shorter skirts, silk flesh colored stockings, hair boyishly short, pumps, hair dyes. Hollywood provided the world with the latest fashions and glamour. Women looked to the stars for beauty tricks and products T. Baliton

Behavior & Attitude Flappers exposed the spirit of recklessness Greater assertiveness Smoking & drinking in public Dancing with reckless abandonment Casual dating

Work Life After the war, most jobs went back to the men. Opportunities available in teaching, nursing, & clerical jobs Some women broke the “nurturing” stereotypes by working as taxi drivers or oil well driller By 1930, 10 million women had jobs but were paid less than men. R. Hoffman

Home Life Public agencies helped handle more family tasks like child care and care of the elderly. More free time Wider availability of ready made clothes, prepared food, and household labor saving devices. Marriage more an equal partnership based on personal choice (love), divorce laws were modified in many states. R. Hoffman & T. Baliton

Double Standards 1920’s morals loosened only so far. A double standard of moral behavior existed-greater sexual freedom for men than women. Margaret Sanger advocated a woman’s right to control her own body by using birth control methods. Resulted in reduced birth rate, average size of families declined.

Summary: Negative Effects on Changing Lives of 1920’s Women Pressure of juggling both work & family Adolescent rebellion Conflict between traditional and modern ways of thinking Double standard Limited admissions to medical schools Few managerial positions Inequality in the workplace Lower wages than men earned Greatest Contribution to the nation’s economy was as a consumer. Women were the major buyer of goods.
