Role of librarians in improving the research impact and academic profiling of Indian universities J. K. Vijayakumar Ph. D Manager, Collections & Information Services 10 th International CALIBER, Shimla (12-14 March, 2015)

Abstract  Scholarly Communication - Only reviewed and indexed research pieces qualify for the ratings and rankings of Universities and Institutions worldwide.  It is essential to bring a large number of ‘reviewed’ research papers in indexed journals, from Indian institutions.  Many researchers do not gain an understanding of this.  Librarians should start creating awareness among potential young researchers and faculty.  INFLIBNET should start national wide awareness and programs.  Let us discuss some experiences, the tools and initiatives.

World Class University “Everyone wants one, no one knows what it is, and no one knows how to get one”. Philip Altbach, Boston College, US on the “World Class University” The key pillars:  Teaching  Knowledge Transfer  Global outlook  Research

KAUST - profile Data source: Elsevier Scopus Started in September Ranked 12th in research impact (Citation per faculty) world wide (QS University ranking) in 2014

38.5% Scores are related to Scholarly Publications

Shanghai Ranking 40% Scores are related to Scholarly Publications

Are we waiting? Comparison of Research Publication Output of USA, China & India between (Source: Scival) In 1983, China had 6% of articles in the Web of Science. In 2013, China has13%, second only to the United States at 29%. (Source: Research fronts 2013: Thomson Reuters, April 2013).

India among top 10 countries in Bibliometric studies. Bibliometrics Data source: Scopus We (Librarians and Information Scientists) produce reports, journal articles and produce PhDs in bibliometrics. But, not giving importance to its applications, like University rankings, increase research impact etc. We do not engage our users in campus wide initiatives for such awareness.

Library Services+ Organize Author Workshops. Establish Writing and Support Center. Usage of Citation databases. Create awareness on Citation Metrics (h-Index, IF etc). Create awareness on Profiling (ORCID). Implement and Promote Open Access. Provide Research Services. Involve in Research evaluations. Initiate Research Data Management and Data Citation.

Supplementing Peer-Review, traditional citations Include discussion (e.g. Twitter), saving/downloads (e.g. Mendeley) Recommendations etc. ImpactStory, Plum Analytics, Mendeley F1000, PLoS Article Level Metrics

Author Profiling Creation of a unique author identifier. Most databases allow. Connect all your papers together within a database. Correctly identifying all publications by an author within a single database Avoid confusions in multiple names (including maiden names), similar names/initials Linking articles together will increase the h-index within a database. Be ready to known as a NUMBER

ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized. Include your ORCID identifier on your Webpage, when you submit publications, apply for grants, and in any research workflow to ensure you get credit for your work.

Open Access We Cite.. What We See. By definition an open-access article has greater visibility, and it’s becoming evident that scientists do take the opportunity to read and use what they would otherwise not have seen. Across a range of scholarly disciplines, opening access to articles increases their citation rate © 2007 Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society

INFLIBNET’s role  In INFLIBNET took a major step by providing quality e-content and indexed publications to the Country (Consortium).  After 10 years, right time for INFLIBNET to focus on increased quality e-content creation from India to indexed publications.  Organise awareness programs across the country on importance of indexed publications, quality of research and authoring quality articles.  Become as a national coordinator for ORCID and help in 100% coverage of Indian researchers.  Get active in University rankings and research impact measures.  Work on national wide Open Access policy.

Thank you J.K. Vijayakumar Ph.D, Manager, Library Collections & Information Services
