ECO SCHOOLS BIG THINK TIME Wednesday 22 nd June 2016

2015 – 2016 ECO activities this school year In the Autumn Term we focus on Energy – Switch Off Fortnight – How Low Can You Go? Day In the Spring Term we focus on Waste – ‘Phil’ the Bag textile collection In Summer we focus on growing – Gardens – Food

What do you Remember? In your groups think about what we have done and what you remember. Give 2 examples of how we can save energy Give 2 ways of reducing waste (think reduce, re-use, recycle) Give 2 reasons why we should grow more food and why we should think about what we grow in our gardens (think insects) Do you have any new ideas for each term? Energy Waste Growing

Feedback

Energy/Water Turn off equipment when not in use Turn off lights in empty rooms Remember to turn off taps No running water when cleaning your teeth Use water butts in the garden Lift sharing ~ save fuel Buy locally grown food to save fuel

Waste Put more in the recycling bin Re-use where possible – carrier bags for rubbish bins, multi-use carrier bags Plastic bottles for watering and planting ‘Phil’ the Bag (textile recycling) “Do not empty me today” signs Reduce Re-use Recycle

Growing Grow flowers that help the wildlife like bees and butterflies. Without bees we cannot grow our own food like tomatoes. Grow our own food to save food travelling around the world Gardening club have planted seeds of sweet peppers, cucumbers, courgettes and pumpkins. We should see the vegetables when we return after the summer holidays. Everyone grew a tomato from seed and took the plant home. – How are they getting on? – Don’t forget to count the tomatoes you get from your plant and let us know. – Count the tomatoes you harvest over the summer holidays and put them on a little chart to bring back in September. – Photographs would be nice too

Well Done! Well done for everything Eco you have done this school year. Don’t forget to keep practicing the Eco Code.
