Kamilah Henderson An Introduction Edu 650 Karen Schoenecker

2 My name is Kamilah and I am joining class from Northern California's San Francisco Bay Area. I love being out doors, spending time with my son, and hanging out with friends. Road trips are great or a simple trip to the library can be just as fun. My interests also include reading memoirs and documentaries, enjoying music, new adventures, and working with youth! Tell us who you are, your professional background and experience, and your interests. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Education studies from Ashford in 2014 and I have been working with youth in education since around I have been a teaching assistant, student aide, after school academy teacher, program coordinator, and career counselor. I have began the new year with a new position as an Educational Mentor for foster youth with my main goals being to provide educational support and make sure students in the foster care system are graduating high school.

3 Share the type of school you attended as a child and one key experience during your time in school that had a lasting impact on your life. I attended public schooling throughout my life. One key experience for me was leaving my first elementary school after 3 rd grade and starting at a new school for the 4 th grade. I moved from Oakland to Hayward and changed school districts. Even though the cities were only about 20 minutes apart, I will never forget the change in diversity, environment, and programs offered to students. We did not have music class, PE, or even a school bus that took students to school at my first school. Still today student's in Oakland districts lack the "amenities" students not far from them are privileged with. This left a lasting impact on my life and is the reason why I have gained a passion for working with youth from under- served communities. Lockwood Elementary, Oakland, CAFairview Elementary, Hayward, CA

4 Describe the type of position you hope to have in the future. In the future, I want to continue working with youth from under-served communities. I would like to be in a role where I am working within a school or a program that is putting students on a path to college even though they may be the first person from their family to even think about college. I have had the opportunity to teach in the classroom and it was a wonderful experience. However, I hope to be in a position where I am providing the additional support that students need outside of direct classroom instruction.
