Academic Writing 1.Follows a structure 2.that is understood by others = 3.helps wide audiences 4.sort through complex ideas such as research. Maria’s Blog: sites.com/professors- ambassadors-blog/why- does-academic-writing- existMaria’s Blog: sites.com/professors- ambassadors-blog/why- does-academic-writing- exist Formal or Academic = One-way communication used in impersonal and formal settings. Characteristic of written communication.

Academic Writing 1.Follow a model (or 3 or 5) 2.Know your style guidelines from the beginning 3.Keep your eye on your “golden thread(s)” 4.Revise throughout all the way to the end

Editing

1.Works best for long work with a mutually agreed upon template. 2.Revision is iterative – so is feedback and editing. 3.Share the feedback you have had before – if long winded or redundant then tell them to watch for that. Relies on feedback from a trusted source. After graduation consider co-authoring with someone else.

Editing 1.Agree on time/price as a contractual arrangement – no surprises. 2.Agree on the focus. 3.Know that you are in control as customer 1.Do you want it back in stages? 2.Are there particular concerns?

Publishing

Formal vs Informal – Different goals Authority Reputation

Publishing Informal 1.Uploading your dissertation to Research Gate, Scribd- DocNet, etc. 2.Most conferences 3.Speaking engagements 4.Networking Formal – peer reviewed 1.Publishing your dissertation on ProQuest 2.Submitting articles to journals 3.Some conferences 4.Books

Marketing

Did you think the work was done when you published??? Silly you! Web world divides into inbound and outbound – another way of looking at it might be relational vs. targeted. Publishers will tell you the best determinant of success is whether or not an author markets

Marketing Cost and Benefits 1.Talking to friends – lowest cost in time or money 2.Blog – publish to free places such as Research Gate etc - - Cost and relative short time for possible benefit 3.Reach out by –Cost + Time 4.Social Media –-Cost + ++ Time 5.Write or Speak - -Cost maybe payment ++++Time 6.Teach – hopefully no cost even payment Time
