Conflict Resolution Skills The Vocabulary terms in this lesson are: Nonviolent confrontation. Negotiation. Mediation. Neutrality. Click the term to display its definition.

Resolving Conflicts Peacefully Nonviolent confrontation is resolving a conflict by peaceful methods. It allows you to settle matters without angry words or looks, threats, punches, or weapons.

Resolving Conflicts Peacefully (cont’d.) Sometimes, in order to resolve a conflict peacefully, both sides must compromise—that is, give up something to reach a solution that suits everyone. However, never compromise on the following: Your deepest values Your sense of right and wrong The rules of your parents, school, and community Compromise is an essential element of healthy and mature relationships. It works in everyday situations when two people disagree on common matters. Ask the class to give examples of situations in which a teen should not compromise.

Resolving Conflicts Through Negotiation A key factor in conflict resolution is negotiation—the process of discussing problems fact-to-face in order to reach a solution. Effective negotiation includes these elements: Talking Listening Considering other points of view Compromising

Resolving Conflicts Through Negotiation (cont’d.) The T.A.L.K. strategy can help you remember how to negotiate by using the steps of conflict resolution. Take time out before you confront the other person—at least 30 minutes. Allow each person to tell his or her side of the story uninterrupted. Let each person ask questions of the other. Keep brainstorming to find a good solution for both parties. When people negotiate, they must ensure that they know what to say, and should stay calm. They should try to talk to the other person privately and avoid accusing, insulting, or threatening the other person. However, a person should never stay around to negotiate if there is a weapon present or if he or she is threatened with physical harm.

Peer Mediation Mediation is another way to solve conflicts. An important part of mediation is neutrality. Some schools use peer mediation to resolve conflicts caused by behavior such as name-calling, bullying, or gossiping. In peer mediation, a student or a pair of students mediates a discussion between the teens in conflict.

Achieving a Win-Win Situation Some people approach conflict resolution with the belief that someone must win and someone else must lose. This view can make the disagreement worse. It’s healthier to think of conflict resolution as a win-win situation. When people seek to work out their conflicts together, they don’t give up until they have reached an agreement. When a solution to a problem is acceptable to each person, everybody wins. Negotiation and mediation help to keep conflicts from getting out of hand. By discussing the conflict, people may come up with solutions that make matters better than they were before the conflict.
