Sketching and drawing projects Sketch A rough drawing of an object, not to scale DrawingIs a likeness of an object drawn to scale Both of these are used to plan a project DimensionsActual measurements of the finish project

Perspective (isometric)One view shows 3 dimensions of an object 3 view (orthographic)Three individual views of an object used To show all sides an dimensions.

Tools: Not shown,Protractor 45 X 45 X 90 Triangle

Computer Adided Drafting (CAD)The use of a computer and a Program to draw a project LINES: Lines are the language of drafting. Each line shape and Shade will represent different things to the draftsman.

Border: Very dark lines that define the drawing area on a paper Object: Lines that are dark that outline the object you are drawing Hidden: Dashed lines that show a line that can not be seen in this View. Dimension: Solid line with arrows at the end that show the Measurements of an object. Extension: Lines that do not touch the object line that show the Exact spot to measure from. Break:Zig-zag shaped line that shows that a part of an object is gone. Center: Long and short line that shows the exact center of an object.

Getting ready to draw Paper set up (according to Mr. Williams) Follow the steps in the handout. 1. Get drafting board, T square, paper, and tape together. 2.Tear off 4 small pieces of tape and put on the upper corners of the board. 3.Hold T square against the left side of the drafting board with your left hand and place the long side of the paper against the straight edge of the T square in the center of the board. 4.Place the tape over each corner of the paper catching just the edge Of the paper and do not move the paper

5.Using the scale and the square draw a ¼ “ line on the paper remember do not have the border line touch the outside edges of the paper. 6.On the bottom of the paper draw a 1” line from border line to border line. Then divide this space into 3 equal parts. In the left hand box put your name and date. In the middle box put the project. In the right hand box the scale and view. Use 1/8” lettering for all of these. 7.Now either center your view or draw in quadrant lines (lightly) and draw your views.

Drawing to scale: Is the use of a scale (ruler) to draw something Smaller or larger to fit on your drawing paper. Usually large objects are scaled “down” to fit On the paper. Types of scales: Architects: Increments of 1/4’’, ½”, 3/8”, ¾” etc. Engineers: Increments of 1/10 th. Dimensioning: Extension lines do not touch object lines. Dimension lines do touch extension lines.
