Using the Alphabet of lines

Drawing should be near bottom left corner. The front view shows how wide and how tall the object is

Top view should be drawn directly above front view. There should be a couple of inches of space. It shows how wide and how thick the object is.

Right side should be drawn a couple inches to the right of the front view. It show how tall and how thick the object is.

Object lines are drawn thick and dark. They represent the edges of the object.

Use light, thin, construction lines to help make your object lines.

Hidden lines represent edges of lines we cannot see from the front, top, or right side, but we know they are there.

Hidden lines are shown in all 3 views to show hidden parts.

Hidden lines are shown in all 3 views to show hidden parts. Here we have shown the motor compartment.

Center Lines show us the center of a circle. They are shown with a long, short dashed line

Center Lines show us the center of a circle. They are shown with a long, short dashed line. They are also shown in top and side views.

 Section lines are used to make hidden parts stand out. They usually are drawn at angle and are only done on one view.

They are drawn lightly at an angle. They do not cross over hidden lines

Dimensions are the measurements. Height, Width, Thickness, Hole Locations. Dimension are drawn thin and dark. There are three type of Dimension Lines: Extension Lines : look like brackets Dimensions: have arrows at both ends and a measurement in the middle Leader Lines are notes that have an arrow point to the object it is describing.

Start with extension lines for the width. They do not touch the object lines.

Then show the dimension line. (remember arrowheads at the end)

Add the measurement in-between your lines. 5”

Now add the height in the Right side view. Start with extension lines. Then dimension and measurement 5”

Next add thickness dimensions 5” 1

Now add the hole location dimensions using the extension lines and center lines 5” 1 2.5”

Now add the leader lines This give the builder Information about the drawing and product. 5” 1 2.5”.5” Diameter Hole Wood

Phantom lines represent moving parts. They are drawn with along dash then two short dashes then another long dash 5” 1 2.5”.5” Diameter Hole Wood 12 3 6 9

5” 1 2.5”.5” Diameter Hole Wood 12 3 6 9
