INSECTS BY SAM

WHAT DO ALL INSECTS HAVE IN COMMON? Head, Thorax, Abdomen & 6 legs

HOW DO INSECTS CHANGE? Incomplete Metamorphosis with 3 stages: egg; nymph; adult (like dragon fly) Complete Metamorphosis with 4 stages: egg; larva; pupa; adult (like butterflies) Incomplete Metamorphosis Complete Metamorphosis

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSECTS? Yes, about one million species known to us and probably a few million more undiscovered! Read on for common facts about different species……………..

ALL BUGS DO WHAT??? Eat liquid food through a rostrum Rostrum

WHAT IS NEAT ABOUT BEETLES? There are more different types of beetles than any other insect They are known as armored insects because of hard exoskeleton

HOW ABOUT BEES AND WASPS? Live in colonies in hives with a queen They both sting - wasps can sting many times, but the bee will die after one sting – OUCH!

BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS CAN? Crawl first and then fly – they have a complete metamorphosis Butterflies are usually colorful and fly during day Moths like nighttime flying

WHAT ABOUT ANTS? Ants are strong and can carry a dead mouse with team work. Live in colonies with a queen

FLIES Pesky houseflies and mosquito Can spread diseases

GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKETS…. Make chirping music by rubbing its wings and legs They hop, hop, hop like a frog and bunny If a bird eats a grasshopper leg, a new one will grow back!

THE END
