Easter Rising 1916 By Alex Elworthy

The Easter Rising was a rebellion against British rule in Ireland. It took place mainly in Dublin It began on April 24 th 1916, which was the day after Easter Sunday it lasted 5 days. On Easter Monday a group of 1800 people took over some key buildings in Dublin. GPO became the headquarters, on the steps of the GPO Patrick Pearse read a statement that Ireland was a free country he said Irish men and woman would rule themselves

Fighting broke out on the streets of Dublin. The British used heavy guns against the Irish all over the city. Within a week the leaders of the rising realised they would not be able to beat the army. They surrendered and were arrested by the British. More than 500 people died during the rising. At first the Easter Rising had very little support in Ireland. After the leaders were executed people began to respect what they tried to do. The leaders became heroes. Eamon De Valera was one of the leaders that survived. The out come of the Easter Rising would change Irish history forever. The Rising left iconic buildings in Dublin city centre.

Buildings Involved in 1916 Dublin Castle : Sean Connolly led an attack on Dublin Castle shortly after noon on the 24 of April The rebels didn’t manage to take over the castle because they wrongly thought there were a lot of soldiers on duty, in fact there were only six.

GPO It was here where Patrick Pearse issued the Proclamation of the republic. James Connolly commander of all rebel forces in Dublin along with Patrick Pearse and other rising leaders occupied the GPO for a week until the British shelling and resulting fire forced them to evacuate. The GPO was rebuilt in 1929 but bullet holes can still be seen.

The Shelbourne Hotel The Hotel was built in 1824 with the ICA in St Stephens green and the British took over the Hotel after three hours assault by machine guns. Liberty Hall The proclamation was printed in the basement of liberty hall on Easter Sunday ready for distribution the following day.

BOLANDS MILL The 3 rd Battalion under commander Eamon De Valera occupied Bolands mill on the grand canal dock great location as it controlled the railway line and the main road from Dun Laoghaire to the city centre.

Leaders

Eamon De Verela ( ) He enlisted in the Irish volunteers in During the Rising he was in charge at Bolands Mill. Following the surrender he was court martialled and sentenced death but because he was born in the U.S.A he was reprieved. He went on to be a leading figure in Irish politics. Thomas Clarke ( ) Clarke returned to Dublin in He joined the Military council which planned the Easter Rising. He was the first to sign the proclamation because of his seniority and commitment to Irish independence. Clarke was with the group that occupied the G.P.O. He opposed surrender and faced the firing squad at Kilmainham gaol on May 3 rd 1916.

Padraig Pearse ( ) He was chosen as the spokesman for the Rising. Pearse read the Proclamation outside the G.P.O. He issued the order to surrender. He was one of the first to be executed on the 3 rd May 1916.
