SEEK AND REPORT TRUTH ACCURATELY AND FAIRLY

Be the watchdog of government. Watch for scandal and wrongdoing. The most important job of a journalist.

Give public information about goods, products, services and events. Use news and advertising to do this.

Report current and upcoming problems. Journalists must understand their region’s culture, history, politics and economics to fulfill their duties as a sentry.

The mass media should reflect an accurate record of local, national and world news.

Comics, features and photos add a light element to the news.

The mass media is responsible for passing along the news that is created in a social situation. (ex. “Did you read about the new civic center in the Tribune yesterday?”)

The press provides a forum in which all sorts of ideas are presented. The press gives citizens a forum to gain support for issues that are important to them.

They tell people what to think about. People will pay more attention to the issues that the mass media focuses on.
