4 W HAT IS A J OURNALIST ? A person with a career in journalism.

5 R OLE OF J OURNALISTS 1. Political function: “watchdog” of government, monitor those in office 2. Economic function: inform readers about products, goods, services, events, prices

6 R OLE OF J OURNALISTS 3. Sentry function: press must tell us not only about what is going on today but also what is likely to happen tomorrow

7 R OLE OF J OURNALISTS 4. Record-keeping function: keep accurate record of local, national, and world news 5. Entertainment function: provide a diversion from straight information
