While it's not an official College Board event, the exam review is taught by experienced AP educators and provides area students a great opportunity to not only practice for the AP exam but also see an NBA game! The review will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Toyota Center. The cost is $30 which includes: review up to 2 subjects, review materials, 1 Rockets game ticket and AP Review t-shirt. Participants may register online at Use promotion code: review.

Why do religions organize space in distinctive patterns?

Religions ask questions like… What is the purpose of life? Why are we here on earth? Where did we come from? Where will we go when we die?

Sacred Space Physical spots with meaning to a particular religion – Places of worship – Sacred sites/structures

Christian churches Church attendance important to most denominations Back in the day, churches usually in town center/square Orthodox: more ornate/decorated Protestant: simple Catholic: between the two

Christian holy sites Many like to travel to various places mentioned in Bible esp. life of Christ Travel wanes as conflict increases Ex: Biblical Paul goes to several places in Syria…. Any takers? JK.

Muslim mosques Important for community/commu nal worship Central courtyard Pulpit faces Mecca Tower for call to prayer

Holy Places in Islam Associated with life of Muhammad City of Mecca

Buddhist pagodas Elaborately decorated Contain sacred relics (bones or clothing of Buddha or other Lamas) Not for communal worship or prayer

Buddhist holy places Life of Buddha NE India/Nepal

Baha’I houses of worship Will not be near clusters but in new areas to try and diffuse

Cosmogony “How did the universe begin?” Ethnic religions: two forces collided Universalizing religions: creator

Burial CIJ: bury in a cemetery – China: too many ppl, space limited, cremation Hindu: cremation on a pyre Tib. Budd.: scavengers; cremation for monks Some cultural influences on all: burial at sea

Calendar Judaism: lunar with ag. Base Islam: lunar with seasons varying Christianity: solar calendar
