What happened? Formed August 23 rd, 2005, hit land on August 29 th, Primarily hit the Gulf coast, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Category 5 storm when in hit land with winds up to 140 mph. $108 billion in damage (Costliest in US history) 1,833 Total Fatalities Massive flooding events in New Orleans, LA.

The Storm

Stretched across 400 miles Hit Florida as a category 3, then intensified to a category 5 storm before hitting the gulf coastline as a category 4 storm. Storm Surge reaching 9-10 meters high.

Why did the city flood?

New Orleans Majority of city is below sea level Levees built only 16 feet high, enough to hold a category 3 storm or less. Many of the levees failed from underneath. Most never topped the floodwall, and were in the “safe zone”

What was done to improve the levees?
