Affected the Bahamas, Florida, Cuba, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and most of Eastern North America (Gulf Coast) 43 tornadoes came from Katrina Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi

4 Katrina Time Line August 24, 2005 – storm begins to form
August 28, becomes a category five ( mph winds); mandatory evacuation is announced; warning the levees might break; people are warned of the danger, but don’t evacuate; FEMA and National Guard start to supply the Superdome

5 August 29, 2005 levees start to break (massive flooding results); media starts to report ; road and communication damage make it difficult to find new information and send supplies

6 August 30, 2005 80% of New Orleans is under water (flooded);
Under 20 ft of flood water New Orleans is below sea level (a ‘bowl’) Superdome is surrounded by water

7 September 2005 Evacuation of New Orleans becomes mandatory - dangerous conditions: No water No sanitation No supplies Unsafe Conditions No power No communication

8 September (cont) Looting and Violence break out
National Guard called in Martial Law

9 2005 (cont) Bush visits and send billions of dollars in aid, including active duty troops, search for survivors continues; people starting returning by the end of the month October – 9th Ward residents still not allowed to return November – some public schools re-open December – residents of the 9th Ward are allowed to return By December of 2006, less than one half of New Orleans population has returned

Hit the Gulf Coast: Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida 1,273 deaths, 564 missing people, 93 bodies remain unclaimed or unidentified 750,000 people were forced to evacuate, 1 million people were displaced 444,000 people in New Orleans before Katrina 191, 000 people in New Orleans a year later billion dollars in damage 80% of New Orleans was under water on Aug 31, 2005 35 miles of debris left in New Orleans (10 superdomes)
