Presentation transcript:

The Four Gospels Matthew was chosen to present Him as the promised Messiah, the King of Israel. The prominent Idea: Law and Promise Mark presents Him as Jehovah’s perfect, faithful Servant. Everywhere in Mark’s Gospel we see active service to God and man. The prominent Idea: Power and Service

John presents Christ as the manifestation of Deity, the Eternal Son of the Father, who became Man to bring us salvation. He deigned (condescended) to become flesh: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

The prominent Idea: Glory and Life Luke, Jesus is presented as Man in all perfection, the “Son of Man.” The prominent Idea: Grace and Fellowship

The Keys to Dr. Luke’s Gospel Word(s): Jesus, Son of Man Verse: 19:10, "for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." Chapter: 15, Lost sheep; Lost coin; Lost son

Outline Part One: The Introduction of the Son of Man1:1 – 4:13 Part Two: The Ministry of the Son of Man4:14 – 9:50 Part Three: The Rejection of the Son of Man9:51 – 19:27 Part Four: The Crucifixion and Resurrection of the Son of Man 19:28 – 24:53

Luke 1:1-4 “Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us.

It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable Theophilus, ‎ so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.” The Holman Bible

“Luke implied that he was not an eyewitness but a researcher. He was thorough and exact in his research, having investigated for his account everything from the beginning, that is, from the first of Christ’s life.” John Martin, the Bible Knowledge Commentary

“Luke makes it perfectly clear that the inspired writers were not miraculously freed from the necessity of hard historical research … Inspiration was not God magically transcending human minds and faculties;

…it was God expressing His will through the dedication of human minds and faculties. It does not supersede the sacred writer’s own personality and make him God’s machine; it reinforces his personality and makes him God’s living witness.” James S. Stewart

Luke 1:5-10 “In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were righteous in God’s sight, living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.

‎ But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well along in years. ‎ When his division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, ‎

‎ it happened that he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. At the hour of incense the whole assembly of the people was praying outside.”

Luke 1:11-17 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and overcome with fear. But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.

Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. ‎ There will be joy and delight for you, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. ‎

He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ‎ And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”

Verses 16 & 17 “He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God 17 And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah,”

“In verse 16, it says that John would turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. Then in verse 17 it says that John would go before Him. To whom does the word Him refer? Obviously to the Lord their God in the preceding verse. And yet we know that John was the forerunner of Jesus. The inference then is clear, Jesus is God.” William MacDonald

Matthew 3:4 “And John himself was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.”

2Kings 1:8 “So they answered him, ‘A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.’ And he said, ‘It is Elijah the Tishbite.’"

1Kings 18:37 "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again."

‎ Luke 1:18-25 “How can I know this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.” ‎ The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news. ‎

Now listen! You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” ‎

Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept making signs to them and remained speechless.

‎ When the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home. After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said, “The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace among the people.”
