From August 2007 newly appointed trainees will be training under “Gold Guide” Existing trainees will continue to train under the “Orange Guide” and “Green Guide” for GP trainees Some trainees will train via CESR route

Trainees  take overall responsibility for their own training.  be familiar with speciality curriculum, assessments and documentation  maintain a learning portfolio  engage in process of clinical and educational supervision  NHS performance review and ARCP process

Educational Supervisor An Educational Supervisor is responsible for overseeing training and documentation –Confirm appropriate inductions –Be trained to conduct appraisal and to provide feedback –Meet the trainee at the beginning, middle and end of a placement –Develop a learning agreement and educational objectives including plans for study leave

Educational supervisor –Report at the end of the year to inform ARCP (including workplace appraisal) –A new Structured Report Form will be available for this from the New Year (2008) –Provide career advice –Contact the TPD if concerns regarding training and the Clinical Director if concerns regarding performance. –Have role recognised in their job plan

The Learning agreement is a statement of learning goals specific to a placement based on trainee’s needs agreed at the initial appraisal meeting central to the trainee’s learning portfolio

The Learning agreement begins with objective setting clinical training resources are agreed includes work-based assessments examinations, courses, audit, research signed by both trainee and AES

The Learning agreement is reviewed at mid and end of placement informs on trainee’s progress in real-time allows appropriate remedial training informs ARCP and next trainee placement

Clinical Supervisor Work in speciality area Involved in conducting assessments Input into the trainees meetings with Educational Supervisor and ARCP

Training Programme Director works with Deanery, College and NHS Trusts organises specialty training rotation oversees quality control of the programme arranges specialty induction appoints and supports ES /CS for each placement implements the ARCP facilitates remedial training Career management

ARCP Annual Review of Competence Progression Applicable to: Speciality trainees LATs FTSTAs Trainees OOP Academic trainees

ARCP Panel from ( minimum of 3) Postgraduate Dean or TPD TPD, APD, Specialty Regional Advisor, ES’ s, Specialty SAC representative Trust representative Lay member External trainer X 2 Academic representatives if post academic

ARCP implemented by TPD informed by ES structured report and trainee learning portfolio learning portfolio’s comprise WPBA’s, log- books, audit reports, publications, courses attended and examination results

ARCP outcome documented NHS appraisal completed by ES the NHS appraisal documentation should form part of the trainee’s portfolio the ES must also keep a summary copy

ARCP trainee does NOT normally attend outcome 1 = satisfactory progress expected CCT date is set an unsatisfactory ARCP decision (outcomes 2,3,4) requires the trainee to meet with the panel following its meeting to discuss remedial training

ARCP Outcomes The outcome will be sent by the Deanery (EMHWD) to the College or Faculty. The Training Programme Director (TPD) receives 3 copies of the outcome. –one copy to the Educational supervisor –one to the trainee. The TPD (with or without the Ed Supervisor) should discuss outcome with the trainee, document and plan further training

Time Out of programme (OOP) A trainee (normally after first year of training) may seek the permission of the Postgraduate Dean to spend a period of time out of the Speciality training programme. The time out will normally be for a maximum of one year. OOPT OOPE OOPR OOPC

Academic training

ARCP For academic trainees must include 2 academic reps who are not connected to trainees academic programme (1 from speciality and 1 outside speciality) Additional documentation
