Presentation transcript:

Information about the clarinet.  The body of a clarinet is made of variety of materials including wood, plastic, hard rubber, metal, resin and ivory. Proffesinal musicians use African hardwood and many more materials.  Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register key to the earlier chalumeau.  Seal the corners of your mouth around the mouthpiece. If your lips aren't sealing it enough, air will escape and no sound will come out. Your tongue should be pointing at the reed when you play, but not touching it. When you blow, be sure not to puff out your cheeks!

 The Sound on the clarinet is produced from a vibration of the reed caused by the movement of breath over it. In a similar way to blowing over a piece of timothy grass will produce a tone, however the clarinet reed is rigid and comes in varying levels of hardness. The pitch is then altered through the application of the fingers to the tone holes and keys.  There are some different types of clarinets of differing sizes and pitches. The unmodified word clarinet usually refers to the B ♭ soprano clarinet, by far the most common type, which has a large range of nearly four octaves.  The clarinet is 35,000 years old.

 On the B ♭ soprano clarinet, the concert pitch of the lowest note is D3, a whole tone... G6 is usually the highest note clarinets encounter in classical repertoire.  Most instruments have very old ancestors - the clarinet has not... and therefore typical shepherd's instruments will have a completely different system.  The clarinet is usually played where the green part is.

FEEDBACK A fantastic presentation girls. Lots of detailed information and great use of a YouTube clip. A couple of things, however: The picture on slide 2 is of the Oboe – not the Clarinet The modern Clarinet isn’t 35,000 year olds. Have a look at that again. A – Mr O’Sullivan
