What is a flute? The flute is a musical instrument in the woodwind family. A flute, unlike any other woodwind instrument, is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. It has a closed tube at one end with keys and finger holes on the side plus a hole near the top of the flute which where you breath down into. Each type of a flute has a different octave range. They are all written at the same place on the bars, but their pitches are different.

What is the history of the flute? ● The three-holed flute dates back to prehistoric times that was made from the tusks of a mammoth which was in Germany. ● Discovered about 43,000 years ago, the oldest flute with two to four holes was a fragment of a femur from a cave bear in Slovenia but this has been disputed because another flute dates back to 35,000 years ago in Germany that was made from the wing of a vulture. ● The five-holed flute has a V-shaped mouthpiece and is made from the wing bone of vulture.

What is the history of the flute? ● Made from the bones of swans, two flutes -which date back to 36,000 years ago- are among the oldest musicals instruments known to date. ● An old flute made from the wing bones of red-crowned cranes with five to eight holes each are 9000 years old and still playable. ● The earliest Chinese flute is a chi flute, which was discovered in tomb in the Hubei province. It dates from 433 BC. ● More flutes have been discovered in Germany and China as well as flutes in other countries like Ireland and France

What are the parts of a flute? This is called the head joint. It is used for playing the flute through a little hole at the top by blowing into it. This is the body. The body is where you put your fingers to play different notes on the flute. This part of the flute is called the tail. The tail is used for the playing notes with your fingers as well.

How do you play the flute? Bring the head joint up so that your mouth lines up with the hole. Next, you will want to cover some of the hole with your mouth. The flute works by air blowing into the hole by directing it with your lips. After that, blow into the flute so that the sound projects out through the other end of the. When blowing into the flute, instead of blow out like your whistling, blow out like into the flute like your saying the word 'to'. Once the sound comes more clearly, you are ready to play the flute. The only thing you need to learn after is how to play the notes.

● Feedback ● Lots of detailed information here for us Daniel, good job! ● Think about the presentation of your work though. Try spacing out your information into easier reading chunks. ● Target 1: Research a listening example of the Flute so that we can hear what it sounds like. ● Target 2: Research into the Flutes role in the Orchestra. ● Grade – B Mr O’Sullivan
