Presentation transcript:

Second Layer of Poly At this point all poly EXCEPT critical barriers can be removed. Some specs require leaving the last layer of poly up until final clearance air sampling. Poly bundles should not be so large that they can injure workers when removing them from the area.

Third Cleaning Galvanized metal and corrugated metals are tough to clean. All corrugated metal is tough to clean. Seams and bolts, etc. hold ACM.

Inspection by Consultant It’s the job of the on-site Inspector (Owner’s representative) to find any possible contamination. Their job protects the building owner and the contractor. If contamination is found after the job… that’s a liability that can be expensive!!

Final Clearance Testing Air samples are obtained within the work area to meet project or regulatory requirements. AHERA requires aggressive air sampling. That means they’ll use leaf blowers to stir up the air before obtaining final clearance air samples.

Glovebags Glove bags are very useful tools in properly trained hands. They can be used for Class I or III work. There are specific OSHA requirements for their use…. They are commonly used for smaller projects and ACM-related repairs.

All necessary tools go into the bag before attaching it to the pipe. Putting Tools in Bag

OSHA requires smoke testing the attached glovebag before insulation removal. Smoke Testing

For Class I work, OSHA requires a 2 person glovebag operation unless there is not enough space for 2 people. Note the “sprayer”, keeping the insulation material constantly wet during removal. Class I Glovebag Work

After removal is complete, the pipe must be thoroughly cleaned. Cleaning the Pipe

Contaminated tools are removed from the glovebag by drawing them out through a glove. Removing the Tools

The glove is sealed and removed from the glovebag. Removing the Glove from the Bag

Before the glovebag can be removed, all the air must be drawn out with a HEPA vacuum… Extracting Air with a HEPA Vac

… and the waste at the bottom of the glovebag has to be sealed. Sealing the Waste

Then the glovebag can be removed and placed into a disposal bag. Removing the Glovebag

Flooring Removal “Typical” floor tile removal project under containment using long- handled scrapers (“spud bars”).

Flooring ACWM Never underestimate the amount of asbestos that can be released from the removal of floor materials. Wet methods may be required and negative pressure and clearance air samples are often necessary. Do you think this process has created RACM?

Heat Gun Use While heat may be an acceptable method to soften floor tile for easier removal, this method appears questionable.

Infrared Machine The use of infrared floor tile machines have been demonstrated to successfully remove floor tile without rendering it RACM. OSHA would require the contractor to have a negative exposure assessment for this work to be done without containment and PPE.

Dry Ice The severe cold of dry ice shrinks floor tiles, causing them to separate from the mastic. Hazards include oxygen displacement and frostbite.

Roof Removal See Section 4 for the NESHAP Interpretive Rule Governing Roof Removal “Typical” roof removal project. It is a labor-intensive and dirty job. Note decon.

Asbestos-Cement (AC) Roof Removal Removal of a corrugated asbestos cement roof. Note boom used to lower panels to the ground.

Power Scraper Used properly, ride-on “power scrapers” can remove asbestos- containing roofing without rendering it RACM.

Roof Removal No matter how roof removal is done, too often it looks like this.
