2 Definitions Renovation altering a facility or one or more facility components in any way, including the stripping or removal of regulated asbestos-containing material (RACM) from a facility component. “Remodeling” is also considered renovation.

3 Definitions (cont.) Demolition the wrecking or taking out of any load- supporting structural member of a facility and any related handling operations. Intentional burning of a facility is also considered demolition.

4 Applicability Renovation and demolition of most facilities, including buildings, structures, and other installations, are subject to State and Federal asbestos regulations.

5 Exceptions Certain residential buildings may be exempt unless the property was used in the past for non-residential purposes (contact the Asbestos Section for additional information).

6 Asbestos Inspections Must be performed by a licensed Asbestos Building Inspector Must be no more than 3 years old Requirements for sampling locations and number of samples

7 More Definitions Friable Asbestos-Containing Materials – Any material that when dry can be or has been crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder, and which contains more than 1 percent asbestos (e.g. pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, etc.) Non-Friable Asbestos-Containing Materials – All other asbestos-containing materials (e.g. floor tile in good condition, asphaltic roofing materials, etc.)

8 Warning Non-Friable Materials Can Become Regulated by the Forces Acting Upon Them

9 Notification Requirements for Renovations For projects involving greater than or equal to 160 square feet, 260 linear feet or 35 cubic feet of regulated asbestos-containing materials – 10 working day notification For projects involving more than 25 but less than 160 square feet, more than 25 but less than 260 linear feet or more than 10 but less than 35 cubic feet of regulated asbestos-containing materials – 5 calendar days notification For projects involving 25 square feet or less, 25 linear feet or less or 10 cubic feet or less of regulated asbestos- containing materials – Prior to abatement

10 Notification Requirements for Demolitions Notification must be postmarked at least 10 working days prior to the start of the demolition

11 Demolition Notification Must Include: Completed Notification of Demolition Copy of Asbestos Survey Fee

12 Disposal of Asbestos- Containing Materials Never Burn Asbestos Non-friable asbestos-containing waste may go to C&D Landfill Friable asbestos-containing waste must go to approved landfill Must have disposal approval to carry asbestos-containing waste to any landfill

13 NOTE: The facility owner and the renovation or demolition contractor are both responsible for ensuring compliance with the regulations.
