Plains People By: Bailey Breen

Native Fauna: -Buffalo -Hawks -Red fox -Prairie Dogs -Lynx

Native Flora: -Different plants were used for different purposes: Medicinal Dye Food

-In the East, high grasses cover the land.

-In the West, short grasses, and cacti.

Housing: -Settlements were usually divided into smaller bands of approx Tipis were made of hides and wooden poles.

Clothing: -Hand-made from animal hide. -Beads and fringes were added for the art aspect of their culture.

-Feathers were used to count acts of bravery. -Furs were used for warmth.

Diet: - Indian Turnip -Berries (dried) -Fish

-Buffalo (made into pemmican or soup). -Bannock -Venison

Art: -For the aboriginal Plains people, art was never exclusive from function. -Everything was built for both purpose, and beauty.

-Painted hides were traditional.

- Designs depicting animals were very common.

- Repetitive patterns were also used in their designs.

Sundance Ceremony: -It was a special ceremony conducted in response to a vision or a prayer. -The Sun Dance festivities usually lasted several days.

-The ceremony took place around a pole where ropes were secured to the top. -They pierced the breast area then tied the piercing to a rope. -While dancing, they leaned away from the pole and their pain was a tribute to the spirits.
