“Intelligence is not a fixed quality, determined at birth by one's genes. Rather, it is a variable that can be developed at every stage of life.” (Reuven Feuerstein)

Changing Mindsets : Increasing motivation and performance

Understanding Mindsets □ Uqv0v1EE Uqv0v1EE Born SMART….? Am I smart ?

Two major beliefs about intelligence □ Provide 3-5 examples in a school lesson for a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Example below Growth MindsetFixed mind set I am going to give this biology question a go, I don’t know the exact answer but I do know some key words asked in the question. This will challenge me further and I will learn more from attempting it. Being stuck isn’t a bad thing. I won’t attempt this extension question in biology because I don’t understand the question and I have to write more. The extension is just for people who are clever and finish quickly. I don’t want to look stupid.

□ Discuss with your partner, which statements you use in lessons. □ Choose one growth mindset that you will use from now on. □ How are you going to do this in your lessons? How can guarantee that you will do it?

Recap □ Write down alternative answers to ‘instead of’ for a fixed mindset. □ Extension: Produce 3-5 growth mindset targets for your lessons

Part 2 Crazy, Arrogant or a Growth Mindset? 9C9Q88cMgyg Many people feel Kayne West is offensive and arrogant. □ In this interview discuss whether you feel he is being arrogant or displaying signs of a growth mindset; or just crazy as many newspapers claim! □ How can you change certain points he makes to a growth mindset? If any? □ Does he display a growthmind set at all? □ Explain your reasons why.

Fixed mindset Believes: Intelligence is CARVED IN STONE Scores in a test MEASURE POTENTIAL Intelligent people shouldn’t have to WORK HARD Failure reflects a LACK of INTELLIGENCE BLAMES OTHERS and compares themselves with others that fail.

Fixed or growth mindset? StatementFixed or growth mindsetWhy It is only 4 games. We will come back stronger and I believe in my players. Growth mindsetHe is confident in his ability and the players. They will learn from their failures and keep working hard. T02259c In pairs produce a table by adding quotes from Jose Mourinho, whether he is making fixed or growth mindset statements □ Extension: ‘If they are so good, why did he get sacked?’. □ Justify your views on this statement.

Research questions asked to a secondary school pupil – fixed mindset answers What is learning? ‘GCSEs’, ‘Getting a good job’, ‘Getting it right’ (being better than others) When do you do your best learning? ‘When we’re doing things I’m good at’ (Wants to be seen as being clever) What do we do in school that does not help you? ‘Gives me things which are too hard’ (Defeated by challenge) What does your teacher do to help you learn? ‘Tells me what to think when I’m stuck’ (Helplessness) How can you change these answers to a growth mind set?

Growth mindset Believes: Intelligence is FLEXIBLE Learning requires HARD WORK and EFFORT ALL individuals CAN LEARN and improve We CANNOT MEASURE a person’s POTENTIAL

□ List 5-10 growth mind-set targets for school, make them SMART targets. □ Rank order this list in order of importance and justify why. □ Extension: Evaluate what you are going to do less of! Explain why.

What do I need to do? Never except that you can’t! Always attempt answering questions from the teacher. Question things and discuss ways to reach your goal. Listen to feedback positively and respond to feedback Don’t get frustrated if you fail! Take small steps to reach your goal. Take opportunities for building independence. Enjoy being praised for effort. Keep trying! Reflection, discussion, questioning, sharing, taking risks, fun, teamwork

We’re good learners, when we’re stuck we…. “read the question again” “Try breaking the question down Into smaller parts” “go back through my book” “ask a classmate who has a similar problem” “highlight the bits I find difficult or the key words” “try another question and come back to the question I am stuck on later” “look at our working walls and displays” “listen well to others then try again” “ask ourselves where we are going wrong and why” “ask ourselves what could help us, what we need to work it out” “use talking partners (but do not abuse!” “try having a go on my whiteboard first”

IjmnQs Final thought 1. Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed no hope at all. Dale Carnegie 2. Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance. Samuel Johnson 3. It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. Confucius 4. You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it. Margaret Thatcher 5. Dreams don’t work unless you do. John C. Maxwell 6. Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. Thomas Watson 7. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. Theodore Roosevelt 8. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. Albert Einstein 9. Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. Joshua J. Marine 10. Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. George Bernard Shaw □ Which quote do you like best? Explain why.
