LES PÉQUISTES A CHC 2D Canadian History Presentation

ECONOMICS the impact of hyperinflation on Quebec was worse than in other provinces in the years after the centennial, Robert Bourassa was elected on the promise of new jobs for Quebecers however, with higher costs and companies closing, there were less jobs to go around Bourassa was voted out of office in favour of the Parti- Québecois under Réné Lévesque

SEPARATION at the time, Lévesque downplayed the part of his party’s platform demanding a separate Quebec however, Canadian corporations in Montréal felt it would only be a matter of time before the Parti- Québecois (or Péquistes) acted on that desire to form their own country as a result, many corporate headquarters left Montréal and shifted to Toronto — making Toronto the economic engine of Canada from then on

BILL 101 fears over the PQ’s platform proved true when, in 1977, the PQ enacted Bill 101 Bill 101 legislated that, from now on, all signs in Quebec must be in French and French only a department was established to go around and ticket businesses that did not comply with the new law international business is done in English, not French, and many businesses were unwilling to change their name to fit the new law — especially since it would alter their trademarked logos

BILL 101 for example: Pizza Hut would have to rename itself Chez Pizza if it wanted to open restaurants in Quebec the cost of changing signs, menus and pizza boxes was too high to make it worth opening those restaurants Quebecers began to miss out on trends that were happening in retail in other provinces… which only fuelled the idea that Quebec was better off on its own even further

IMPACT the exodus of businesses from Montreal would have an impact they would not expect…
