Do-First Review Foreign Policy Notes. IE: 4 Major Reasons for US Involvement in affairs of other countries 1)Why does the United States get involved in the affairs of other countries? 2)Can you think of any examples of the U.S. intervening in the affairs of other countries? 3)What impact did the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center have on the American people?

Objective SWBAT evaluate how 9/11 attack on the World Trade center contributed to US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.. Why it matters… Why does the Middle East face the challenges and conflicts it does today? Patriotism=devotion to ones homeland.

Food for thought Should the U.S. be involved in the affairs of other countries?

“global war on terror” Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush developed a strategy to address the threat of terrorism, known as the “global war on terror”.

Bush’s strategy The U.S. will act alone when necessary The U.S. will use preventative military action to address military threats even before an attack against the U.S. was about to occur.

Ultimately, this strategy led to U.S. military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan…

T/F: The early 2000’s caused the United States to develop a new foreign policy towards the Middle East. T/F: President Bush’s strategy of “the global war on terror” justified military involvement to protect US National Security in those countries supporting terrorist organizations.

Why did the U.S. invade Iraq? Saddam Hussein – A brutal dictator who had ruled Iraq since 1979 – Committed genocide against the Kurdish population of Iraq – Believed to be secretly manufacturing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons Why did the U.S. believe Iraq was dangerous even before 9/11?

The Bush administration claimed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that Saddam Hussein would use them to the threaten the United States. That Iraq had links to al Qaeda (terrorist organization responsible for 9/11 attacks) Why did the United States invade Iraq in 2003?

What has happened in Iraq since the invasion? ᵡNo WMDs were ever found ᵡIraq was highly unstable and insecure for over 8 years after the invasion Saddam Hussein’s brutal dictatorship was put to an end Saddam captured and killed

Costs of the US invasion of Iraq Over $700 billion Over 4,000 U.S. lives Over 100,000 Iraqi lives 25% of soldiers returning from war suffer from psychological issues

Why are U.S. forces in Afghanistan? Al Qaeda terrorist network was identified as responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan and supported by Afghanistan’s extremist government, the Taliban. Taliban refused to hand over Osama Bin Laden. How might 9/11 have contributed to a renewed sense of patriotism in America?

What has happened in Afghanistan since the invasion? The Taliban government was overthrown and al Qaeda’s base of operation in Afghanistan was largely eliminated. ᵡAl Qaeda members, including Bin Laden escaped into neighboring Pakistan. Afghanistan created a new constitution in 2004 and held elections. ₓTaliban forces continue to fight back, and have regained strength in recent years. ₓLife continues to be difficult for Afghanistan’s citizens- poverty and civilian causalities have increased frustration with the U.S. intervention.

What has the current war in Afghanistan cost the US/ Causalities: Over 2,000 US soldiers have died in Afghanistan.

Does the author of this cartoon support the U.S. military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan? How do you know?

Quick Check 1.T/F: The main factor that contributes to terrorist activities in the Middle East is the Palestine effort to establish a homeland. 2.T/F: The Gaza strip is currently under Palestinian control 3.T/F: The countries surrounding Israel are predominantly Arab countries that practice Islam.
