Revisiting common errors Tutor: Prof. Cecilia A. Zemborain Student: Ma. De los Ángeles Svidersky

Similar sounds Stress Stress is a suprasegmental feature simply because it affects units that are longer than just a phoneme or segment: it affects syllables. Words in isolation.Prominence It occurs inside a word, but it is noticeable in context. A syllable that is prominent is more noticeable or important than the rest of the syllables in that word.

Stress – Prominence – Rhythm – Intonation They are important features that we have to consider in order to develop good comunication skills.

Allophonic features Aspiration Lateral /l/ Close front and close back vowels / i, u / The use of weak forms The importance of weak and strong forms. Strong forms to emphasize. The intention of the speaker.

Aspects of connected speech Assimilation Elision Linking Awareness of their use and correct transcription.

All of the features studied are important to develop our communication skills. Even more important is the fact of being aware that we need to recognise and use them to communicate, but also to teach a language. As future teachers, improving our pronunciation and our knowledge about it, is absolutely essential.
