2 Purpose of the book Help learners focus on longer term goals.
Bring learners gradually from controlled, cognitively based performance to automatic, skill-based performance. Highlight the interdependence of pronunciation with other aspects of language use.

3 Part 1. The orientation begins with word stress & nonlinguistic syllables and it includes units on phrases and sentences, vowels, rhythm, and the “the sound of English”. In the latter unit, it has a sound-distinguishing exercise.

4 Part 2. Part 2 contains 13 units on basic stress, rhythm, and intonation. Each chapter tries to bring learners from a controlled to an automatic performance by following a specific buildup pattern. But: The unit on compound-noun stress is oversimplified.

6 Part 3. Part 3 presents vowels in 35 separate units.
In each of the chapters, learners move from words and phrases, to producing sentences and answering questions, to such communicative activities as telling a short story using targeted words. Previously introduced vowels are contrasted and summarized periodically. But : Lack of the closing consonant influence practice.

7 Part 4. Part 4 focuses on grammar words and sentence rhythm.
But: Not having students attempt to learn to produce /ð/ before vowels and before consonants.
