 New England  Land was not good for agriculture  Economy based on trade instead  Traded DRIED FISH, WHALE OIL, and FUR/PELTS  Large forests provided: LUMBER FOR SHIPBUILDING Different Economies

 Middle Colonies  Just like New England –land wasn’t good for large scale farming.  Factories were built  Slaves and or indentured servants were needed to do the hard labor

 Southern Colonies  Hot, wet climate and fertile soil  Economy based almost entirely on AGRICULTURE AND SLAVERY  Plantations grew cash crops  Cotton, tobacco, and indigo

 In 1510 the Spanish government legalized the sale of African slaves in its colonies  Hundreds and thousands of natives died of small pox  Not enough labor to work on the sugar plantations in the West Indies  Triangular Trade  The exchanging of goods between the Americas, Europe and Africa Triangular Trade and Slavery

 Africa and Europe were trading partners  Bartered/traded with guns, rum and iron goods

 North America  Positive (+)  Free labor  More profit $$$$$  Europe  Positive (+)  Sell RAW GOODS to North America at cheaper prices  Africa  Negative (-)  Loss of work force  Cultural and social damages Triangular Trade Effect on Economies

 The journey slaves took across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to the Western Hemisphere  Torture  Suicide  Some slaves stayed and worked on sugar plantations  Others put back on ship and sailed north to the plantations of the Southern colonies Middle Passage

 Mercantilism  A system of creating and maintaining wealth through controlled trade  Navigation Acts  Limited colonial trade  Could only trade with England  Could only use English ships to transport goods  English added duties/taxes on goods  England thought it was good for the colonies  Bad for Colonists  Limit to economic freedom  Merchants turned to smuggling to make money England’s Control Over Colonial Trade I’m an English trade ship....I will only sail to the Colonies and back
