2 MERCANTILISM According to the economic theory of
Mercantilism, a nation becomes powerful by increasing its trade. Colonization was strictly a way to make money for the “mother” country Trade was a way to make money through imports and exports Imports = goods brought into the country Exports = goods sent to markets outside of the country You want more exports than imports

4 NAVIGATION ACTS Series of laws passed by England to regulate trade
between the mother country and her colonies—known as The Navigation Acts. Colonial merchants wanted to regulate their own trade and develop their own trade routes

5 TRIANGULAR TRADE Triangular trade route was the most famous
route set up by colonial merchants

7 Merchants transported rum, guns, and other supplies from New England
First Leg Merchants transported rum, guns, and other supplies from New England to West Africa These goods were traded for slaves NEW ENGLAND Guns rum Other goods WEST AFRICA slaves

8 Traders carried their slaves from West Africa to the West Indies
Second Leg Traders carried their slaves from West Africa to the West Indies They would sell their slaves and use the profits to by molasses West Africa West Indies slaves

9 Exports from New England were shipped to The West Indies
Final Leg Exports from New England were shipped to The West Indies These goods were exchanged for sugar and molasses that was used to make the rum Fish, lumber livestock NEW ENGLAND WEST INDIES Sugar and molasses

13 Slaves were fed once a day and if they refused were force fed
Conditions were terrible along this trip leading to a breeding ground for disease Many sick slaves were thrown overboard to prevent epidemics Approx. 3 million slaves died along the middle passage. Many tried to drown themselves before boarding. Slaves were lined up along the lower portion of the boat and chained together

14 EXPANSION OF SLAVERY Slavery was expanding because of tobacco farms
The plantation system depended on slave labor because of the vast amount of land
