Shield volcano Mt. St. Helens in Washington is a tall, steep volcano that formed from many layers of lava alternating with layers of ash. It stood quietly for almost 123 years before it began to rumble in 1980. A series of small earthquakes shook the volcano during March of 1980. A part of its northeastern slope also began to bulge. The volcano finally erupted on May 18th. It blew away 400 meters of its top. Ash, gas, and steam roared out of the volcano. The fiery, hot wind blew down trees like toothpicks. It burned leaves and other vegetation 20 km away. The volcano also blasted an ash cloud 25 km into the atmosphere. The cloud drifted hundreds of kilometers to the east, blocking the sun at noon and dumping a thick carpet of ash on several northwestern states.
