EDCI 270 Final Project: Biome Module Elizabeth Davis December 2015

Standards Abiotic and Biotic Factors Animals and their Habitats Objectives Given the information on each biome page, students will be able to answer a multiple choice question about each corresponding biome. After watching an introductory video on ecosystems and biomes, students will be able to identify abiotic and biotic factors given a set of pictures of organisms. After completing the biome module, students will be able to correctly identify each biome from a set of four pictures. *Note that all graphics used in this presentation were accessed via the search on PowerPoint and are available for use under creative commons

Hi! I’m Jane. I’m your tour guide. Listen to the video on the right. Then, click the button on the bottom of the page to begin our biome adventure! If video does not play on click, please go to this link:

Ecosystem and Biome Overview TundraAquaticGrassland Forest Desert Take the Quiz Start here Next, starting with the Tundra move through the biomes left to right. Then, do the same on the second row. Finally, don’t forget to take the quiz

What is an ecosystem? What is an ecosystem? What is a biome? What is a biome? Before we begin our adventure, let’s review a few definitions.

An ecosystem is a community of living things in addition to the non-living components of their environment and how they relate.

ABIOTIC FACTOR… This is a NONLIVING thing

BIOTIC FACTOR… This is a LIVING thing

A biome is a group of similar ecosystems making up a large area on the earth’s surface Let me show you all the places our adventure will take us!

Sub-biomes Climate Location Biodiversity First stop: the Tundra! Checkpoint Question

Before we move on, answer this quick question. Which sub-biome is colder? The Artic Tundra or the Alpine Tundra? a) The Artic Tundra a) The Artic Tundra b) The Alpine Tundra b) The Alpine Tundra

Sub-biomes Climate Location Biodiversity Grab your wetsuit! Let’s jump into the aquatic biome! Checkpoint Question

Before we move on, answer a quick question to test your knowledge on the aquatic biome! Based on your knowledge, which sub-biome do you think you would find salmon? a) Marine Biome a) Marine Biome b) Freshwater Biome b) Freshwater Biome

Sub-biomes Climate Location Biodiversity Now that we’re back on dry land, let’s go look at the grassland. Checkpoint Question

Before we move on, let’s do a quick question to test what you’ve learned. In which place would you find a Savanna Grassland? a) North America a) North America b) Asia b) Asia c) Africa c) Africa

Sub-biomesClimate Biodiversity Location Let’s climb to the tree tops to look at the forest biome! Checkpoint Question

Before we move on with our biome adventure, see if you can answer this quick question. Which one of these is NOT a sub-biome of the forest biome? a) Cold Forest a) Cold Forest b) Boreal Forest b) Boreal Forest c) Rainforest c) Rainforest

Sub-biomes Climate Location Biodiversity Grab your water bottles because we’re exploring the desert next! Checkpoint Question

Before we leave the desert, let me ask you one quick question to see what you have learned. What is the MOST defining characteristic of the desert biome? a) Extreme Temperatures a) Extreme Temperatures b) Little or No Rainfall b) Little or No Rainfall c) The Cactus c) The Cactus

Wow! What a fun adventure exploring the five main biomes of the world. It was a blast being your tour guide! Now, before we call it a day let’s see what you have learned. You can go back to the homepage to review any of the biomes. When you’re ready, click the button on the bottom of the screen to take the quiz!
