Riyaad-us-Saliheen Patience Taught by Br Wajdi Akkari Commentary of Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen Lesson 8

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ( ﷺ ) passed by a woman who was crying over a grave and said, "Fear Allah and be patient.'' She said, "Away from me! My calamity has not befallen you and you are not aware of it.'' The woman was later told that it was the Prophet ( ﷺ ) (who had advised her). She came to his door where she found no doorkeeper. She said, "(I am sorry) I did not know you.'' Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) said, "Patience is (becoming) only at the first (stroke) of grief". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Another narration in Muslim says: The woman was crying over her son. Patience is at the very early moments of grief A person is excused for ignorance – legal matters and the situation This woman did not identify the Prophet ( ﷺ ) so he excused her. If it was intentional it could be kufr; ignorance is excused but not in all matters For example - Tawheed – you will be held accountable for not learning about it and not knowing it Hadith

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) said, "Allah, the Exalted, says: 'I have no reward other than Jannah for a believing slave of Mine who remains patient for My sake when I take away his beloved one from among the inhabitants of the world". [Al-Bukhari] Issue of Sharr (evil) is relevant, nothing is pure evil - 'From the evil of what he has created' Through evil we recognise goodness Goodness in death – a means to enter Jannah for those around, we also know that certain circumstances make people Shaheed (e.g. drowning) What appears to be evil may be good if we look from a different angle Allah does whatever he wills; we don’t have the right to criticise or complain as our knowledge and understanding is limited But evil is never attributed to Allah it occurs as a consequence to some individuals but never a direct act Allah does not decree anything without His Great Wisdom Hadith

A’ishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) about pestilence and he said, "It is a punishment which Allah sends upon whomsoever He wills, but Allah has made it as a mercy to the believers. Anyone who remains in a town which is plagued with pestilence maintaining patience expecting the reward from Allah, and knowing that nothing will befall him other than what Allah has foreordained for him, he would receive a reward of Shaheed". [Al-Bukhari] If you hear that it (plague) has broken out in a land, do not go to it; if it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not go out escaping from it.” (Al-Bukhari) The reward of a Shaheed can be obtained in other ways; one who has drowned, a woman who has died during the delivery of her child and dying from a stomach disease is some of them Cautiousness is important we cannot just say we put our trust in Allah and cross the road with our eyes closed, Tawakkul ala Allah but you also have to protect yourself Hadith

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) saying, "Allah, the Glorious and Exalted said: `When I afflict my slave in his two dear things (i.e., his eyes), and he endures patiently, I shall compensate him for them with Jannah." [Al-Bukhari] One must be patient otherwise it is not applicable Could be mercy from Allah – no fitnah, more time to learn the Deen Hadith

`Ata' bin Abu Rabah reported: Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) asked him whether he would like that he should show him a woman who is from the people Jannah. When he replied that he certainly would, he said, "This black woman, who came to the Prophet ( ﷺ ) and said, `I suffer from epilepsy and during fits my body is exposed, so make supplication to Allah for me.' He ( ﷺ ) replied: 'If you wish you endure it patiently and you be rewarded with Jannah, or if you wish, I shall make supplication to Allah to cure you?' She said, 'I shall endure it.' Then she added: `But my body is exposed, so pray to Allah that it may not happen.' He (Prophet ( ﷺ )) then supplicated for her". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Hadith

Sahabah understood the reality of Taqwa and Zuhud Real zuhud – not letting dunya enter your heart We seek refuge with Allah from two kinds Nervous system – physical – treated by doctors Due to shayateen and jinn – will have access to a person and wrestle and may beat him (epilepsy); treatment to prevent it if a person is keen on the adhkaar (morning and evening duaas and reciting Ayatul-kursi) Whoever recites it at night will remain under Allah's protection till the morning, plus Surah Ikhlaas, Falaq and An-Naas, duaas from Sunnah of the prophet Alleviate it after it has occurred – Ruqya (reciting Quranic verses till they leave) Commentary
