When I Grow Up Gr. 2 Financial Literacy  SS.4.FL.1.1 People have many different types of jobs from which to choose. Identify different jobs requiring people to have different skills. SS.4.FL.1.2 People earn an income when they are hired by an employer to work at a job. Explain why employers are willing to pay people to do their work.

It’s okay if you do not know what you would like to do when you grow up. There are many factors that will determine your future career path. Think of how each will affect your future. I love to help animals. For this career I need to go to the university. I also need strong math and science skills. Do: Explain to students that it is okay not to be sure what they want to be when they grow up. Many factors will determine your future career path. Factors such as interests, values, skills, goals, experience, and education all play important parts in molding you into your future self. You work full time, that is 8-hours per day and 40-hours per week. You have a 1-hour lunch break per day which is not paid for by your employer. Activity: Your task is to estimate the your daily salary and weekly salary. Don’t forget to deduct an hour of pay for lunch daily. We will later be plotting your numbers on a graph. STEP 1: Use repeated addition to calculate one day’s pay 1 hour $10 STEP 2: Use repeated addition to calculate one week’s pay 1 day $70 Forklift Driver $10 per hour Some Training EXAMPLE JOB CARD Say: Imagine you are all grown up and just got a job. Help students understand that the more education you have the income you will make over your lifetime. Explain to students that income is not the only factor that one should consider when deciding on a future career, however, it is a very important one.
