Pakistan Floods 2010

Causes  On 29 July 2010 flash floods and landslides caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains caused widespread flooding in North West Pakistan.  Rainfall had been higher than normal for the few months leading to the flooding.  The monsoon rainfall of 2010 over the whole country was the highest since 1994 and the second highest during last 50 years.

Impacts  Over 200 millimetres of rain fell over a 24-hour period in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. This was a record amount of rainfall for these to cities.  500,000 or more people had been displaced from their homes  the floods had caused the deaths of at least 1,540 people  2,966 people had injuries

Short term responses  Major countries provided twenty-one helicopters and 150 boats to assist affected people.  The United Nations launched its relief efforts and appealed for $460 million to provide immediate help, including food, shelter and clean water.  Pakistani army deployed troops to affected areas and rescued thousands of people.

Long term responses  New infrastructures had to be rebuilt  The country had to prevent any terrorist attacks  Water supplies had to be restored  People had to be cured from diseases
