11/16/2018 Saudi Aramco Tsunami January 2005 By Abdullah A. Al-Ghanim Y/R D&WG

2 What Are Tsunamis? Tsunamis are ocean waves produced by earthquakes or underwater landslides

3 The word Tsunami! The word is Japanese and means "harbor wave," because of the devastating effects these waves have had on low-lying Japanese coastal communities

4

5 Waves Speed and Height! These series of waves can travel at speeds averaging 450 (and up to 600) miles per hour in the open ocean. Unusual wave heights have been known to be over 100 feet high. However, waves that are 10 to 20 feet high can be very destructive and cause many deaths or injuries.

18 Images before & after Flood
A satellite image taken in 2003 shows the lush vegetation in the Indonesian province of Aceh - one of the regions to be hardest hit by the waves

19 Images before & after Flood
An image of the same region three days after the disaster shows how the water has stripped the land bare - washing away everything in its wake

20 Ferocity of the waves The ferocity of the wave can be seen as the water recedes exposing over 300 meters of beach previously covered by the ocean!

21 Clean Water Clean water is a precious commodity. Rotting corpses have polluted many rivers and most wells have been destroyed!

22 Rescue Rescue workers continue to find bodies in Thailand and elsewhere following the catastrophic sea surges!

23 Recovery Areas hit by the Asian tsunami could take up to 10 years to recover Photo: Maldives, Mulee Island

24 Death Records The death toll from the Indian Ocean tsunamis now stands at 156,000! The toll jumped after Indonesia raised its tally by 14,000 to more than 94,000 early Monday Jan 03,2005

25 Fight Against Time Survivors from tsunami will face a host of new threats in the coming days and weeks: viruses and bacteria in the water, diseases seeping from human remains, and the vulnerability to bugs and other predators that comes from having no shelter.

26 IT Impact Tsunamis are unlikely to impact the region's IT industry, which is centered away from affected areas.

27 11/16/2018 What do we need to know?

28 11/16/2018 For your knowledge If you are at the beach or near the ocean and you feel the earth shake, move immediately to higher ground Stay away from rivers and streams that lead to the ocean Staying away fro all low-lying coastal areas is the safest advice when there is a tsunami warning. Never go down to the beach to watch for a tsunami! WHEN YOU CAN SEE THE WAVE YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO ESCAPE!
