3 The Date Rain began on Easter Sunday, March 23. Rained from the 23 rd to the 27 th

4 The rain just kept coming Nearly 4 trillion gallons of rain –About the amount that cascades over Niagara Fall. the water was12 feet deep.

5 Damage Approximately 100 million dollars in damage 1,000 homes destroyed Many businesses destroyed

6 What rivers caused the Damage Four rivers –Miami River –Scioto River –Wabash River –White River

7 fatalities 300 hundred lives were lost countless amount of livestock was killed.

8 How did Dayton deal with this tragedy??

9 Initaly, John H. Patterson made rescue teams Used NCR whistles to warn people of the danger Had employees make boats Organized the Dayton Citizens Relief Association.

10 Within several weeks… Residents raised $2.15 million dollars. This led to the creation of the Miami Valley Conservancy District This system has 5 dams that collect run off water from the north.

11 In Dayton, the Mad, Great Miami, and Still Water Rivers all merge. This was problematic before the dams

12 How did they help? Set up food and coffee stations Collected food donations Collected clothing and supplies Cooked thousands of meals Provided shelter
