Romeo High School School Improvement Literacy Goals  Close and Critical Reading – Universal Goal  Mark It Up-Universal Goal  Language Arts Support Class – Targeted Goal based on data  Literacy Support Class- Targeted Goal based on data  Literacy is also imbedded into the Science Goal and the Social Studies Goal

 Reaching and Teaching Struggling Learners  Three year grant through Michigan Department of Special Education  Focus on identifying at-risk freshman students using ABC data (attendance, behavior, course completion)  Develop an approach to drop-out prevention that best fits the needs of Romeo High School Students  Attend monthly facilitator meetings and team meetings with cohort schools in Lansing  – Research Phase – reviewed data and identified 30 at risk freshman (15 special education/15 regular education), developed a plan for addressing dropout prevention  – Implementation Phase – implemented Literacy Support Class and Adult Mentoring  – Implementation Phase / Review Phase

  Direct Instruction Tier I, students reading 3+ grade levels below 9 th grade proficiency:  Remediation of reading skills and fluency are directly taught through a series of specific steps: sounds, words, sentences, passages, and comprehension of passages, with fluency. Includes:  group work, individual study, repeated readings, timed readings, comprehension activities Program Tier I

 Tier I Decoding and Fluency/Comprehension Direct Instruction

  Tier II intervention for students reading at a higher level but not yet up to grade level expectations.  Qualifying students have two hour block – English 9 and English 9 Support  Support in English 9 Content Standards  Reading Remediation and Practice  Fluency, comprehension  Read Naturally, SRA Corrective Reading Tier II
