AWAKE p+ beam line HWC C. Bracco, J. Schmidt Acknowledgment: MCS, EPC, MPE, SPS-OP, BI, ABP (survey),STI, EA, ACE, RP

Planned Activities Vacuum: – Leak detection, pumps and gauges, valve movements Diagnostics (BPMs, BCTs, BLMs and BTVs): – Functionality, calibration and logging BIS: – Vacuum, valves, laser dump, beam stoppers TBSE, extraction kickers, MBI and MBG current, WIC, FMCM, SIS (Maskable and un-maskable). – Logic for AWAKE and LHC extraction. Magnets, PC and WIC

Planned Activities Vacuum: – leak detection, pumps and gauges, valve movements Diagnostics (BPMs, BCTs, BLMs and BTVs): – Functionality, calibration and logging BIS: – Vacuum, valves, laser dump, beam stoppers TBSE, extraction kickers, MBI and MBG current, WIC, FMCM, SIS (Maskable and un-maskable). – Logic for AWAKE and LHC extraction. Magnets, PC and WIC

Vacuum Everything ready and ok for proton beam line Plasma cell sector still to be pumped down + leak tests (10 th -13 th June 2016) Interlocks for all installed valves ok and data logged in TIMBER.

Diagnostics 1/2 BLM – Logging done – OP application done (threshold: loss level to be defined) – Layout positions defined – Need to check interlock (BIS) BCT – Logging OK – Calibration set-up done BPM – Firmware available since last week – Electronic cards installation on Tuesday 7 th June 2016 – FESA server software development and test on-going – YASP integration ready – Logging done

Diagnostics 2/2 BTV – Downstream of plasma cell: fully OK – Upstream of plasma cell: missing filter wheel and flip mirror (week 24) – Logging OK – OP application OK STREAK – No data before August – Logging to be done

BIS User input commissioned and conform: – Vacuum TT41 & valves – Laser Dump – WIC TT41 – FMCM RBL – FMCM RBL – TBSE TT41 User input not yet commissioned: – TT41 converters current – MBI current (need new SW) – MBG branch current (need new SW) Enable all inputs at the BIS level (removed the disable jumpers) and check the BIS master equations (half a day in week 24).

Magnets, PC and WIC (Status on 03/06)

Weak insulation to ground on QTLD : problem with one of the insulators brazed on the coil manifolds  to be replaced. Still EPC qualified as acceptable the measured leak current and tests could be completed. ELQA Magnets, PC and WIC (Status on 03/06)

ELQA Weak insulation of circuit RBI : some cooling flexible hoses with a weaker insulation to ground  removed and resistance increased by x2  acceptable for EPC, tests could be continued Need new SW to complete the tests!! Magnets, PC and WIC (Status on 03/06)

Heat run off all “new” circuits but the MBG last night Tomorrow 07/06 (SPS and LHC TS): – Installation of BPM electronic cards (6:00-10:00 am) – MBSG heat run (10:00 – 17:30 am) – Start release of new SW for main switches Wednesday 08/06 (LHC TS): – Complete release of new SW for main switches within 11:00 am: 1.SW ok for EPC  OP tests a.OK  main dipoles ready for beam extraction towards AWAKE (mains heat run missing!! Need 24 hours of LHC TS) b.Not OK  role back to old SW version  not ready for extraction 2.SW for EPC not OK  role back to old SW version  not ready for extraction Latest Updates and Next Steps

First AWAKE Proton Beam Extraction in Week 24 Main requirement: new SW for main switches deployed and validated. Since heat run of main dipoles will not be performed the powering of the line will limited to maximum 2 hours. Without beam: Pulse full line and check correct triggering of magnets and diagnostics (logging and interlocks in parallel) With beam (pilots: 5e9): Extraction of AWAKE beam from the SPS to the upstream TED Beam to the end of the line: preliminary check of the optics and diagnostics (in particular new BPM electronics)  discard or identify issues which could further delay proton beam commissioning after next TS Possibly rough alignment of laser mirror with respect to proton beam
