Lyuba Gnatovskaya 23, Sverdlov str, fl.32 Yaroslav Russia June 12, 1995 Hello, I’m a twelve year old girl. I live in the town of Yaroslav, which is situated not far from Moscow. We don’t have the house of our own, because the land is very expensive in our country. So almost all people who live in towns occupy flats. Some flats are big and comfortable, the others are very small. Our flat consists of three rooms, a kitchen and bathroom. It is not so bad because some of my friends have their flats consist of one room and a tiny kitchen. My family is not big. My mom’s name is Lyudmila, she is a teacher of Music. My dad’s name is Vladimir, he is a journalist. I have no sisters or brothers. We have a cat named Styopa. He looks very sweat when he is sleeping. The school I attend is called Secondary School #4 with the Profound Learning of English. I’m in the eighth grade though I’m 12 years old, and my friends are 13 and 14. My friends think that I’m a very sociable girl. I can agree with it because the main reason why I like to go to school is in my friends. It is always a pleasure for me to communicate with them. But still I have some favorite subjects. They are Literature and English. I’m also interested in Physics and Chemistry but they are a little bit boring for me. I like to travel but I’ve never been abroad. I have visited many Russian towns and cities. I think that St. Petersburg is the most beautiful city of our country. We call it the Northern capital, the “Star of Russia.” I hope my family will go there this summer.

Not so long ago we had a guest from Exeter, England. This girl lived in our family during one week. We became good friends. I’ve learned a lot about their traditions and I tried to tell her as much as I could about our life. We had almost no problems with understanding each other. One funny thing about her was the following. When she came to Russia the weather was very hot for our climate. Sometimes the temperature was +95 F. But when she was packing her clothes in England she thought the at the weather in our country was very cold and windy and rainy. So she had almost no summer clothes with her but her suitcase was full of warm sweaters and jeans. That’s why she had to wear the same clothes all the week long. She looked funny in her black T-shirt, light- brown trousers and green boots. Today is June 12. In Russia we celebrate the Independence Day today. People don’t go to their jobs today. Also our president is going to deliver his speech. (It’ll be so boring!) So this holiday isn’t so important for me. When and how do you celebrate Independence Day in America? Is this holiday important to you personally? Now answering your question about Chechnya: I think that all wars are terrible. War means only death and misery, and nothing else. That’s why all my countrymen wait for the end of it. I hope to hear from you. Your Friend, Lyuba Gnatovskaya
