Vocabulary Tests Vocabulary Tests are scheduled every 2 weeks and usually on Fridays Tests are cumulative; First test is 10 words Second test is 20 words Third test is 30 words, etc. Don’t throw away packets or tests when finished; you will need to review them for cumulative tests!

All 3 vocabulary assignments are due the first Friday that unit is assigned: 10 telling sentences 10 flashcards with pictures The Packet

Vocabulary Sentences For each new unit, use the words in YOUR OWN sentences. You can look up sentences to see HOW to properly use the word. Sentence must be your own work, not copied. Four criteria to earn credit for each sentence:

Vocabulary Sentences (cont.2) 1. If the word is a noun, use it as a noun. If the word is a verb, use it as a verb. If the word is an adjective, use it as an adjective. Nouns name. Verbs show action. Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns (come in front of nouns or after linking verbs).

Vocabulary Sentences (cont.3) 2. Spell the vocabulary word correctly 3. Capitalize the first word and other proper pronouns and use end punctuation 4. The sentence must be a telling sentence. (I must be able to tell from the sentence that you understand the word’s meaning.) Example: adjacent (adjective) Because his house is next door to mine, it is adjacent. His house is adjacent to mine because it is next door.

Vocabulary Sentences (cont. 4) Example: alight (verb) The airplane alighted on the tarmac when it landed. The butterfly alighted on the rose when it flew down from the sky. The use of because will help you to know that you have created a telling sentence. Do not put a comma in front of because.

Vocabulary Flashcards On the front of the card, write the word and draw an appropriate picture to remind you of meaning. Make the vocabulary word bold and big enough to easily see. On the back of the card, write the word and its definition Make one flashcard per word DO NOT use pencil unless colored pencils for pictures on front of flashcards, or you can use pencil to rough out picture and then go over it in pen, not marker; it will bleed through.

Vocabulary Assignments per Unit Write 10 telling sentences Create 10 vocabulary flashcards with pictures Complete your packet All are due the first Friday that the unit is assigned
